The popping of the jaw can be quite a nuisance. It may be accompanied by pain, clicking, or a grating sensation. It may even make it difficult to open your mouth wide in some cases. Are you one of them who experiences jaw popping? Here is what you should know!
Jaw Popping: Causes
While popping the jaw is often harmless and resolves independently, it can sometimes signify a more severe condition. One common cause of popping of the jaw is joint inflammation. It can be due to conditions like arthritis or TMJ disorders. When the joints in your jaw become inflamed, they may not function as smoothly as they should. When you move your jaw, this can cause popping, clicking, or grating sounds. Joint inflammation may also lead to pain and limited mouth opening in some cases. Another possible cause of popping of the jaw is dislocation of the TMJ. It connects the lower part of the jaw to your skull and allows your mouth to open and close. If the joint becomes dislocated, it can pop out of place when you try to move your jaw. It usually happens after an injury, but it can also occur due to arthritis or other conditions that weaken the joint.
What Are the Treatments?
if jaw popping is mild, you may not need any treatment. However, if your symptoms are severe or persist for more than a few days, you may need to see a doctor. If your popping jaw is due to joint inflammation, your doctor may recommend medication to reduce inflammation and pain. They may also recommend physical therapy exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles around the joint. If your popping jaw is due to dislocation of the TMJ, your doctor will need to put the joint back into place. Once the joint is back in place, you may need to wear a splint or brace to keep it stable. In some cases, surgical treatment is required to repair damage to the joint.
