What Happens if You Brush for Too Long?

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Evan
What Happens if You Brush for Too Long? While we recommend that you brush your teeth regularly for two minutes, you should take extra care to ensure that you do not overdo it. Over-brushing your teeth refers to how often you brush your teeth, how long you do it, and how hard you brush. Here are some of the risks of over-brushing.

Tooth Sensitivity

When you brush your teeth for too long, you risk wearing away your tooth's enamel. This will leave the nerve endings in the dentin layer exposed, leading to tooth sensitivity. Sensitivity will cause you to feel pain whenever you expose your teeth to sweet, cold-hot, or sour foods and drinks.

Tooth Abrasion

This refers to the loss of the tooth structure. Tooth abrasion can be caused by using a hard-bristled toothbrush and over-brushing. If you have shiny, worn, or yellow, or brown spots on your teeth near the gum line, you may be a victim of tooth abrasion. Avoid brushing your teeth longer than two minutes, use a quality toothbrush with soft bristles, and use the correct technique. Talk to our professionals immediately to prevent further damage to your tooth.

Gum Recession

Improper brushing technique and overzealous brushing will cause your gums to recede and expose your tooth's sensitive areas, such as the root's softer cementum. When this happens, you will experience pain and sensitivity. You will also be at risk of tooth decay. Receding gums can also cause other periodontal and health complications. If gum recession, abrasion, and sensitivity are left untreated, they can lead to tooth loss. To avoid such risks, you should ensure you brush your teeth as recommended by our professionals and schedule regular dental check-ups to have your teeth professionally cleaned. Call our offices for more information and learn how to brush your teeth right.
