Dental Deep Cleaning: Everything You Need To KnowIt may come as a surprise to you, but did you know that there are different levels of cleaning that you can get at the dentist? Aside from your routine standard cleaning, you can get a deep cleaning. Dentists conduct routine standard cleaning every six months, and it typically focuses on cleaning the teeth above the gum line.

Deep cleaning involves more than just cleaning the teeth above the gum line. It focuses on using techniques to remove tartar or plaque beyond the gum line. A deep cleaning helps to avoid gum diseases and even tooth loss. It involves both gum scaling and root planning.

Is The Process Painful

One of the major concerns with deep cleaning is if the procedure is painful. Fortunately, deep cleaning is not painful. While tooth scaling and root planning can cause some discomfort, the dentist will use anesthesia to ensure that you do not experience pain.

Will I Experience Sensitivity After the Procedure?

Yes, sensitivity after the procedure is unavoidable. However, eat soft foods such as mashed potatoes for a few days after the procedure to avoid sensitivity. Additionally, you can take over-the-counter medication to help you deal with the sensitivity.

Advantages of Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is important to either stop the advancement or to stop the occurrence of gum diseases. It also helps to eliminate bad breath that can come from gum disease, treat infection and promote healing of the infection. Cleaning beyond the gum line also helps to protect the roots of the teeth.

Disadvantages of Deep Cleaning

While deep cleaning has so many advantages, it also has disadvantages. Since deep cleaning involves cleaning beyond the gum line, it can lead to nerve damage. Additionally, deep cleaning can cause the gum to recede. However, the most common disadvantage is that it can lead to sensitivity.

As much as routine dental cleaning is important, once in a while you will need a deep cleaning. Therefore, it is best to consult your dentist on when you can have a deep cleaning. A deep cleaning will typically take two or more sessions, with each session lasting about one or two hours to complete.
