How Often Do Braces Wires Get Changed?

Posted on 7/15/2024 by Excel Dental
Curly haired woman with braces at Excel Dental in Battleground, WABraces are an important step toward a beautiful smile and a healthy mouth. Following the installation, regular check-ups and care are essential. One of the main parts of braces is the archwire, which puts pressure on your teeth to move them properly in your mouth. You might be wondering how often orthodontists change braces wires.

Frequency of Braces Wire Changes

The frequency of wire changes varies depending on your specific treatment plan and progress. However, most orthodontic patients can expect to get their archwires changed every 4 to 8 weeks. At the beginning of treatment, you may start with relatively flexible wires that require more frequent changes. As treatment progresses, your orthodontist will graduate to stiffer, heavier archwires that move teeth more effectively.

During an adjustment visit, your orthodontist will remove the existing wire and assess your progress. If your teeth have shifted as intended, a new wire that applies optimal force for the next phase of treatment will be put in place. Some signs showing that you are due for a wire change include feeling pressure or tightness and seeing more noticeable gaps between teeth.

First Wire Changes

The orthodontist will thread in the first archwire at your initial bracket bonding appointment. It is commonly made of flexible nickel titanium, which is gentle on your teeth during the early stages of treatment. The first wire change often occurs 4 to 6 weeks after your teeth have begun moving. Your orthodontist will replace it with a slightly stiffer wire.

Final Wire Changes

In the last few months of treatment, archwires are usually changed every 6 to 8 weeks. During this stabilization period, heavier rectangular steel or cobalt chromium wires hold teeth in position. Your orthodontist will monitor your progress and determine when you can remove the wires and the braces.
