Should You Get Treated for Sleep Apnea?

Posted on 5/1/2025 by Excel Dental
Sleep-deprived businessman yawning at his desk, appearing drowsy and unproductive, due to sleep apnea.Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people. It occurs when your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This can lead to a variety of problems, including:

•  Daytime tiredness
•  Snoring
•  Irritability
•  Headaches
•  High blood pressure
•  Heart disease

If you think you might have sleep apnea, it's important to see a doctor to get diagnosed and treated. There are a number of different treatment options available, including:

•  Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): CPAP is the most common treatment for sleep apnea. It involves wearing a mask over your nose and mouth while you sleep. The mask is connected to a machine that blows air into your airways, keeping them open.
•  Oral appliances: Oral appliances are mouthpieces that fit like a mouthguard. They work by gently repositioning your jaw and tongue to open up your airway.
•  Surgery: Surgery is typically only considered for people who don't respond to other treatments. There are a number of different surgical procedures that can be used to treat sleep apnea.

Oral Care and Restoration Dentistry for Sleep Apnea

In addition to these treatments, there are a number of things you can do to improve your oral care and restoration dentistry if you have sleep apnea. These include:

•  Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day: This will help to keep your mouth clean and free of bacteria.
•  Seeing your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings: This will help to identify and treat any problems with your teeth and gums early on.
•  Wearing a mouthguard: If you grind your teeth at night, wearing a mouthguard can help to protect your teeth from damage.

If you have sleep apnea, it's important to work with your doctor and dentist to develop a treatment plan that's right for you. By following these tips, you can improve your oral care and restoration dentistry and reduce your risk of developing other health problems.
