Are Dental Exams Really That Important?
Most patients instantly picture painful instruments jabbed into their gums repeatedly, but the examinations could not be further from the truth. They are painless. There is mild discomfort while tartar is removed by the use of a scaler. This is necessary in order to clean those deposits from both above and below the gumline. Patients need to understand what while there may be some discomfort associated with the exam it is nothing compared to the potential invasive procedures which may be necessary if tooth decay sets in destroying soft tissue and tooth enamel. Avoiding the exams and cleanings, patients are merely delaying more painful and more invasive procedures later on down the line.
What Happens During an Exam?
For those patients who are unfamiliar with exams, we will begin by gathering a complete medical history which will include prescribed medications and pre-existing conditions which can affect the recommended treatment by our staff. An oral cancer screening will also be performed at this appointment. This is due to the fact that early detection is so important to the treatment outcome and any further issues that could arise.
